Big Sleepout raises more than $43k for Marlborough charities

Sixty-eight participants woke this morning after spending the night in Seymour Square on cardboard and in sleeping bags to raise money and awareness for the work of Christchurch Methodist Mission in Blenheim, Manu Ora and Crossroads Charitable Trust.
From 5pm yesterday, participants and supporters gathered at Nativity Church for an evening focused on the work of Christchurch Methodist Mission and its support for people experiencing homelessness across Marlborough.
Three people who had been helped by the organisation bravely shared their stories, two via video and one in an interview with MC Shanan Barnett. Their words reinforced the impact of the work carried out by all three organisations supported through the event.
A silent auction followed, with local businesses donating a variety of gifts and prizes. All proceeds went towards the fundraising effort.
As of last night, the inaugural Blenheim Big Sleepout had raised $43,056.
Support throughout the night was provided by Māori Wardens, Blenheim Rotary Club volunteers and several Christchurch Methodist Mission staff members.
A mild night proved kind to participants, with temperatures staying above 7C. A 5.30am wake-up call brought the event to a close, with those involved sharing stories of their experience around the brazier before enjoying breakfast provided by Marlborough Youth Council.
