SH1 resurfacing to improve safety at Nolan’s Crossing

A major resurfacing project on State Highway 1 near Tuamarina will deliver a safer, smoother road for the more than 6000 vehicles that use the route each day, says NZTA.

Contractors will spend 10 days working at Nolan’s Crossing, between Picton and Blenheim, from Sunday, 6 September to Wednesday, 16 September.

Wayne Oldfield, Area Manager Marlborough, says crews will asphalt a 450m section of highway where the pavement has reached the end of its life.

“Work crews will mill out the old road surface and replace both lanes with new asphalt. This will improve skid resistance and road grip for traffic.”

“We are expecting to lay about 4,500 square metres of asphalt. The result will be a much improved and safer road surface for a route that carries more than 6,000 vehicles every day,” Wayne says.

The work will require traffic management measures, with Stop/Go controls in place throughout the project.

“For a job of this size, it is unavoidable. However, we will do our best to minimise disruption.”

“Our road crews will be working 24 hours a day for 10 days. This will allow the job to be completed faster, reducing overall disruption to the public,” Wayne says.

Drivers travelling through the site should expect delays of up to 10 minutes.Wayne says the work will provide a permanent solution after earlier temporary repairs.

“People travelling between Picton and Blenheim will have noticed the temporary speed limit through this site following a temporary fix earlier this year. This work will permanently address the issues where the pavement has reached the end of its life.”

“Doing a long-term fix now means less maintenance, fewer disruptions for drivers, and reduced long-term maintenance costs in the future,” Wayne says.

With spring and summer approaching, motorists can also expect to see more roadwork sites across Marlborough in coming months.

“Our contractors will be carrying out road rebuilding, resurfacing, and chipsealing on all of the main State Highways including State Highway 1, State Highway 6, and State Highway 63.”

“We will have more to say and more information to share about the specific sites and the work involved once our programme is confirmed,” Wayne says.

Driver advice

Drivers should allow extra travel time and expect delays of about 10 minutes while travelling through the Nolan’s Crossing work site.

This is particularly important for those travelling to Picton ferry connections, although ferry traffic will be prioritised.

Motorists are urged to follow all traffic management directions, temporary speed limits, and instructions from road crews.

Works schedule

• From 7pm Sunday, 6 September to Wednesday, 16 September
• Work will operate 24 hours a day, including Saturday, 12 September and Sunday, 13 September
