Weld Pass delays
Drivers travelling over Weld Pass on State Highway 1 faced delays on Tuesday as urgent work was carried out to clear a slip. The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) said the slip had been moving on to the road at a sharp bend and needed to be removed to prevent motorists crossing the centre line to avoid it. The highway was closed three times during the day for one hour at a time to allow the work to be completed.

Leak found after 3000m³ water loss
A major leak in an Awatere water main has been located near Seddon after about 3000 cubic metres of water was lost, prompting conservation measures for about 750 residents. Marlborough Waters says the leak is not beneath the Awatere River as first feared, making repairs easier. Water is being trucked into the area while crews work on the pipe, and residents are being urged to limit use to essential needs. A precautionary boil-water notice remains in place for Seddon.

Marlborough faces NZ's steepest rent rise
Marlborough renters are facing the fastest-rising rental costs in New Zealand, according to new figures that show the region recorded the country’s biggest annual increase in average weekly rents.

New data from realestate.co.nz shows Marlborough’s average weekly rent rose 8.2 percent over the past year, climbing from $511 in August 2025 to $553 in August 2026. The increase of $42 a week was the strongest regional growth recorded nationwide.

The figures come as New Zealand’s average weekly rent increased by just 1.5 percent, rising from $628 to $637 over the same period.

Marlborough was well ahead of other regions for rental growth. Canterbury recorded an increase of 5.7 percent, taking average rents to $622 a week, while Otago was up 5.6 percent to $653 and Waikato climbed 4.1percent to a record $587.

By comparison, average rents fell in several parts of the country, including the West Coast, Gisborne, Southland, Manawatū/Whanganui and Wairarapa.
