A section of central Blenheim’s Market Street has reopened to vehicles, marking the completion of the first stage of the town centre redevelopment.
The section between Arthur and High streets reopened on schedule, following construction work by Fulton Hogan as part of the Market St revamp.
Blenheim’s CBD portfolio holder, councillor Ben Stace, says the reopening is an important milestone for the project and will improve access to the area.
On the effects of the closure so far on retailers, Stace says the council is aware it has not been easy.
“We in council absolutely understand that this period has not been easy for the businesses in the area, including not having the Market Street carparks available.
“I encourage the public to come and check out the completed Stage 1 section and support our local businesses."
Stace says he is pleased with the design of the completed section, describing the new streetscape as modern and reflective of Blenheim and Marlborough.
Parking remains available in the town centre, with the first hour free using the pay-by-plate system. Off-street parking is also free at weekends.
Work is continuing on the second stage of the project between High and Alfred streets.
According to the council, construction is progressing ahead of schedule, with the reopening of Market Street North now expected about a month earlier than the late-November time frame previously communicated.
The council says it will continue working with businesses, business support groups and other stakeholders throughout the remainder of the construction period.
