Ferry runs aground near Picton

A rescue mission is underway after the Interislander ferry Aratere  run aground just outside of Picton.

Rescue boats are on the way to the stranded ferry which ran aground in Pine Bay about 10.15pm

It is believed the freight ship suffered a total loss of power.

A spokesperson from Port Marlborough says their marine team has been mobilised and tugboats are assisting the stranded vessel.

There are no reports of any injuries among the 50 passengers and crew on board.

People have flocked to the lookout on Queen Charlotte Drive where the ferry can be seen in the distance.
