The Wairau club picked up their first medal in the national rowing champs at Lake Ruataniwha today.

Tristan Gregory-Hunt claimed a gold medal in the final of the club single sculls, prevailing by a second and half from Otago’s Edwin George in the title decider.

Wairau rowers were close to medals in other events, Fred Vavasour finishing fifth in the men’s under-22 single A final, Logan Docherty eighth in the same event.

The men’s club four of Liam Collins, Hugh Straker, Joe Hughes and Liam Kirkland came home eighth in their final, while Vavasour and Docherty ended up fourth in the final of the under-22 double.

Blenheim’s Tom Murray came home fourth in the premier men’s single sculls final, with former Wairau oarsman Robbie Manson third in a race won by Phillip Wilson from the Petone club.

Robbie picked up his first medal of this regatta when he took out the premier double title alongside Finn Hamill, wearing Waikato colours.
