Hammer attack at beach beauty spot

A woman camping at a Marlborough beauty spot has been hurt in a horrifying hammer attack.

The woman was camping at Marfells Beach when she was assaulted by a man who knocked her unconscious.

Police are hunting for the unknown attacker and friends of the victim are warning people to be on their guard.

In a social media post, the victim’s friend Paul Vinnie said his friend had been badly hurt in the shock attack.

“Our friend was attacked this morning with a hammer by a man in a van at Marfells beach DOC site in Marlborough.

“Our friend was struck in the head and knocked unconscious. She is currently in hospital under observation.

“Police are currently hunting this man, please contact police if you see this van thank you.”

A police spokesperson says the man approached the victim and assaulted her.

“Police are aware of an incident that took place on Marfell’s Beach yesterday morning.

“A man is reported to have approached and assaulted a woman around 8:50am at the campsite on the beach.

“She was transported to hospital in a serious condition.”

The woman was taken to Wairau Hospital. A Te Whatu Ora spokesperson says the patient was stable and was able to be discharged from the Emergency Department yesterday evening.

Police are making positive enquires to locate the man involved in the incident. Anyone with information can contact Police on 105 and make a report quoting file number 230717/5879.
