Marlborough Boys’ College First XI began their quadrangular tournament with a hefty win over Rathkeale College in a 50-over match at Horton Park yesterday.
MBC, on the back of a superb 117 from 149 balls from opener Luke Pannell registered a handy total of 249, then dismissed their North Island opposition for just 94, in the 21st over. Tim Petrie supported Pannell with a patient 38 while Flynn Hawtin added a quickfire 32 down the order.
Opening medium pacers Hunter Ruffell, 3-29 from six, and Baxter Croad, who bagged 3-28 from five, had Rathkeale under immediate pressure from which they never recovered.
In the other match yesterday, Hutt Valley International beat Nelson College by 152 runs at Oliver Park. Today they meet MBC while Nelson play Rathkeale.
T20 competition
Celtic and Renwick picked up wins in the Marlborough senior Twenty20 competition at Horton Park last night.
Celtic beat Wairau by five wickets, scoring the winning run from the first ball of the final over. Their innings of 151-5 was anchored by Jerrym Lamb with 60 not out, while Liam Young added 23.
Batting first, Wairau limped to 145 before being dismissed in the 20th over. Chris Turkington, with 30, Andrew McCaa, 27, and Tarin Mason, 21, led the scoring. McCormick was Celtic’s most successful bowler with 3-30, while Jaden Adams bagged 2-29, Josh Poole 2-26 and Fred Dodson 2-16.
On the No1 wicket Renwick notched a comprehensive 60 run win over Wairau Valley. The victors racked up 169-3, an unbeaten 63 to Luke Frankland, plus 40 from Corey Bovey at the heart of their total. Matthew Stretch, 2-34, was the pick of the Valley attack.
In reply they were in immediate trouble and struggled to form a meaningful partnership. Sam Boyce, with 23 from 21, and Stretch, 24 from 33, led the batting effort, while Keiran Gaudin, who took 3-17, Jacob Zillwood, 2-16 and Mike Anstis, 2-15, did the damage with the ball.
The next round will be played on Friday.
