A serious accident on State Highway 1 this evening has closed the main highway south.
Emergency crews are at the scene of the crash which has closed the road south of Blenheim.
The two vehicle accident happened about 8.15pm this evening, police fire and ambulance crews rushed to the scene.
A police spokesperson says early indications are people have sustained serious injuries.
"Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Diversions are in place on Awatere Valley Road and Taylor Pass Road. There are no diversions in place for heavy goods vehicles."
Fuel is spilling from one of the vehicles and efforts to contain the spread are underway.
Traffic is being stopped at Seddon, with truck drivers being asked to consider parking up for the night as the road will be closed for several hours.
Light vehicles are being diverted through the Redwood Pass.
The Serious crash team have been called to the scene to begin their investigations.
