Marlborough’s flagship women’s football side, the BV Bullets, turned on a much-improved performance against a familiar foe, but still exited the nationwide Kate Sheppard Cup competition in the second round on Saturday.

Playing at A&P Park, Bullets took on Nelson-based side Richmond Foxes, who beat them 7-0 in their previous encounter this season.

This time a gutsy local side held their rivals to 2-1, the match taking on a totally different appearance to the last encounter.

After an even first 20 minutes, both sides going close to the first goal, the opener came immediately before the break.

BV lost the ball in the midfield and a blistering 40m shot from Jenny Harvey scraped under the bar to put the visitors ahead.

The second half continued to be evenly-contested, although opportunities at both ends were unable to be converted into goals. A ball to the face saw BV’s Freya Thompson in the blood bin for nearly five minutes, but the home side soldiered on with 10 players and conceded no ground.

The second goal came in the 72nd minute, Foxes’ Paige Fergusson slamming the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal, leaving BV keeper Jamiee Van Keulen no chance.

However, BV were not finished and, after a cheeky shot from Hannah Cook went wide, a neatly-weighted through ball from Lea Poletti to Lauren Sloan saw her blast through the last defender and smack it home to reduce the deficit to one.

BV coach Scott Kennovin was happy with his charges’ efforts.

“It was a pleasing turnaround from two weeks ago. We wish the Richmond Foxes the best of luck going on to their third round of the Kate Sheppard Cup - as the last top of the south team still standing.”

The home side’s player of the day was Hannah Martin for her solid, consistent defence.

Tomorrow, also at A&P Park, the region's top men's side, Rangers AFC, play their next round in the Chatham Cup, taking on the powerful Nelson Suburbs side who compete in the Mainland Premier League. The match begins at 2pm.
