Grape Growers golfers relish days in sun

Perfect weather conditions prompted some low scoring during the Marlborough Grape Growers Co-op Spring Classic golf tournament at the weekend.

The annual event, which was staged at the Marlborough Golf Club, attracted around 80 players on both days.

On Saturday the players contested a stableford competition, which began at noon with a shotgun start.

The men’s title was won by Robin Whiting with 39 points, the junior men’s by nine-year-old Josh Abraham with 41, the women’s category by Kirsty Hardie Boys with 44.

Saturday results:

Senior Men - 1 Robin Whiting 39, 2 Tim Abraham 39, 3 Ravi Johl 37, 4 Al Parker 37, 5 Hans Blohm 37, 6 Drew Ellis 36, 7 Mark Watson 36.

Junior Men - 1 Joshua Abraham 41, 2 Neal Ibbotson 39, 3 Stuart McLagan 39, 4 Trevor McGarry 39, 5 Tony Tripe 39, 6 John O’Brien 37, 7 John Humm 37.

Women - 1 Kirsty Hardie Boys 44, 2 Bridget Quaife 42, 3 Marilyn Smith 40, 4 Jackie McGarry 39, 5 Pru Jensen 38, 6 Denise Pickering 36, 7 Viv Boyle 36.

On Sunday the field played a gross and net competition, plus overall winners were named according to their combined stableford points from both days. This was taken out by Kirsty Hardie-Boys with 82 points, while John Humm won the men’s section with a two-day total of 77.

The senior gross on Sunday was won by Paul Silke with 76.

The senior men’s net was won by Hans Blohm with 70, Glen Kirkwood (90) won the junior men’s gross, the junior net prize being claimed by Trevor Skilton with 69.

Tracy Bary won the women’s gross with 77, while Vivienne Boyle took out the net prize with 67.

Junior gross - 1 Glen Kirkwood 90, 2 Bruce Yates 90, 3 Ian Newport 91.

Junior net - 1 Trevor Skilton 69, 2 John Humm 69, 3 Rex Scoble 72, 4 Mike Ponder 72, 5 Stuart Smith 72, 6 Alastair Boyle 72.

Women

Gross - 1 Tracy Bary 77, 2 Emily Stenhouse 80, 3 Marilyn Keenan 89.
