Rugby action at weekend as NZ side comes to town

Rugby will be to the forefront on the Marlborough sporting scene this weekend.

On Saturday, the first round of the Marlborough sub-union competition is played then, on Sunday, a Tasman High Performance XV will take on the New Zealand Under-20 team.

First up comes two intriguing club rugby encounters.

Central, who reached the semifinals of the Tasman Trophy, take on Renwick at Lansdowne Park, while Waitohi host the Moutere/Awatere combined side at Endeavour Park in Picton. Both games begin at 3pm.

In division two Waitohi host MBC Old Boys in Picton, Centtral play Renwick at Lansdowne and Pelorus take on Awatere at Havelock. All games begin at 1.15pm.

The MBC First XV are on the road again, having given up home advantage this week to play Waimea Combined in Nelson. The match kicks off at Waimea College at 11am.

The following day, Marlborough fans will get a chance to see some of the country’s leading young rugby players in action.

The New Zealand Under-20 team v Tasman High Performance XV clash will be on Lansdowne Park 6, with a 2.30pm kick-off.

Two Tasman players, flanker Anton Segner and prop Luca Inch, are members of the NZ Under-20 squad which contains five players who who featured in Super Rugby Aotearoa - Chay Fihaki (Crusaders), Gideon Wrampling (Chiefs), Josh Lord (Chiefs), Ruben Love (Hurricanes and Soane Vikena (Blues).

The Tasman HP starting XV is: Kershawl Sykes-Martin, Leopino Maupese, Atu Moli, Te Ahiwaru Cirikidaveta, Max Hicks, Taya Brown, Jacob Norris (captain), Taina Fox-Matamua; Louie Chapman, Willie Havili, Timoci Tavatavanawai, Tim O’Malley, Levi Aumua, Rahiri Witehira, Taine Robinson.

Reserves: Monu Moli, Matt Graham-Williams, Isaac Salmon, Latu Patelesio, Manase Taufa, Mitchell Barry, Zac Harrison Jones, Viliami Na’apa, Jayden Woolley, Apetone Vaka, Macca Springer.

Football

The table-topping Rangers AFC crew are on the road again on Saturday, taking on Nelson Suburbs Development at Saxton Fields. Kick off is 3pm.

The BV Bullets side take on the competition-leading Richmond Foxes at A and P Park, with a 3pm kick-off.

The second round of Knockout Cup action on Saturday sees Rangers Development and Central Wolves clash at A&P Park, Picton host BV Masters at Endeavour Park and Central Buccaneers meet Call Care Trojans at A&P. All these games begin at 2.30pm. Kicking off at 12.30pm at Athletic Park will be Redwood and Call Care Hotspurs.

Netball

On Tuesday two premier netball games will be played at Stadium 2000.

At 6pm, Tokomaru Crafar Crouch play Awatere, while Tokomaru Picton Motordrome take on Harlequins at 7.45. The other scheduled match, between Pelorus and MGC was played on Friday, July 2 and won by Pelorus, who lead the competition.

Hockey

In premier play this weekend Marlborough Boys’ College First XI take on United at 1.30pm, then table-toppers Beawai meet Arotea Kiwi at 3pm.
