With an improved weather forecast compared to last weekend, Marlborough’s sporting codes are looking for a more comfortable setting for their endeavours tomorrow.

Rugby

The Tasman Trophy semi-finals take place over the hill tomorrow, due to the top qualifiers being Nelson-based sides Kahurangi and Waimea Old Boys.

Central, who qualified fourth, will take on Kahurangi at Sports Park Motueka. The Blues played Kahurangi in round two and were narrowly beaten 35-33, so will be undaunted heading into the play-off. They have also won their previous three matches, two against Nelson-based opponents, adding another level of confidence.

Waimea take on Marist at Trafalgar Park in the other semi, both games kicking off at the earlier-than-usual time of 2.30pm.

Also making the trip to Nelson will be the Moutere women’s side, who will play Waimea Old Boys in a straight final.

The Magpie women have lost three times to their final opponent, beaten 32-31 in their first encounter, 34-17 the second time they met, and 26-15 on the third occasion, so will go into the match as firm underdogs. However, finals rugby is a vastly different beast and Moutere have shown in the past they are able to lift themselves for the big games. The match kicks off at Trafalgar Park at 12.30pm.

The Marlborough Boys’ College First XV are on the road too, meeting the Roncalli Aoraki Combined side in Timaru during round eight of the Miles Toyota Championship. This is a must-win for the eighth-placed local lads, who are taking on the competition’s bottom-placed combination. Kick off is 11am.

In the local division two competition, Awatere take on Central in Seddon, Waitohi play Moutere in Picton and Renwick host MBC Old Boys. All games begin at 1.15pm.

Football

Rangers AFC travel to Neale Park in Nelson to meet FC Nelson Locomotive in their Nelson division one league match tomorrow.

The Blenheim-based side are on top of the league table but will be keen to cement their position against an opponent who have found some strong form since their early encounters.

The BV Bullets women’s side are at home, meeting FC Nelson in a Nelson women’s division one clash at A&P Park, with a 3pm kick-off.

Meanwhile the Mayfield Motorworld division one teams enter the final weekend of round two.

With the top of the table crowded, the club derby match between Trojans and Hotspurs will have a large bearing on the second-round title. They meet on Picton’s Endeavour Park at 1pm.

Central Wolves play BV Masters at A&P Park, kicking off at 1pm, while Rangers Development meet Central Buccaneers at Renwick, with a 3pm start. A catch-up match between Trojans and Buccaneers is scheduled for 6.30pm on Wednesday. The match was called off last Saturday due to inclement weather.

In division two, Rangers Clubs of Marlborough play Rangers Masters at A&P Park while Redwood play Central Privateers at Renwick. Both matches begin at 1pm. In the third game, Picton meet Spartans at Endeavour Park, starting at 3pm.

Netball

The third week of premier round two action takes place at Stadium 2000 on Tuesday.

The 6pm match features leaders Pelorus taking on Awatere, while MGC play Harlequins at 7.45pm and the two Tokomaru sides meet in the non-competition match at the same time.

Hockey

Two premier matches are scheduled in the Whitehaven competition tomorrow. Leaders Beawai take on Marlborough Boys’ College at 1.30pm, while Arotea Kiwi meet Beawai United at 3pm.

Basketball

A top of the south under-15 regional tournament is being staged at Stadium 2000 this weekend.

Five teams will compete in the boys section – Marlborough A Marlborough Development, Nelson, Buller and West Coast. In the girls grade Marlborough, Nelson, West Coast and Buller will do battle. The action begins at 9.30am on Saturday, with finals planned for Sunday.
