Mya makes grade: Marlborough Girls’ College netball captain Mya Wiapo has gained national recognition. The athletic defender has been named by the New Zealand Secondary Schools selectors as part of a 25-strong group to take part in a South Island national development camp early next year.
Golfers seventh: The Tasman women’s golf team battled hard but came out on the wrong side of some close encounters at the recent NZ interprovincial champs, staged at the Levels course in Timaru. Tasman wound up seventh, beating Otago 3-2 on the final day. Their results were: lost to Wellington 4-1, beat Otago 3-2, lost to Northland 3-2, lost to Waikato 3-2, lost to Manawatu/Wanganui 3-2, beat Taranaki 3-2, beat Otago 3-2 for seventh position. The Tasman team comprised: Andrea Thomas (Rarangi), Aroha Minhinnick (Rarangi), Sue Murray (Awatere), Tracy Bary (Rarangi), Lizzie Neal (captain, Nelson), Lee Willets (Nelson).
Carey among medals: Marlborough athlete Carey Dickason came away with a good medal haul from the recent South Island Masters Track & Field Champs in Dunedin. Competing in the W70 age group, Carey won four gold and two silver medals. She claimed gold in the hammer throw (17.77m), long jump (2.56m), triple jump (5.80m) and the women's outdoor pentathlon (2140 points). Her silver medals came in the 1500m (7.20.98) and 3000m (19.26.41).
Spy master: Satellite Spy claimed the double in the recent Waikawa Boating Club race to Mana Island, part of the four-race Versatile Offshore Series. Race record holder, Satellite Spy, crunched 58 minutes and 30 seconds off their 2015 time to finish the round trip to Mana Island and back in 5 hours 7 minutes. The record on handicap, set back in 2009 by Spirit Wind, stayed intact with 4:33:37. Satellite Spy also took the handicap first placing, followed in by Flying Fox and Christchurch-based High Voltage. The next race in the Versatile Offshore Series is Sentinel Rock on January 22.
