Marlborough’s sporting venues will be vacant this weekend as competitors and their families take a break over Queen’s Birthday Weekend.

However, both the locally-based Tasman Trophy rugby teams will be in action. They are playing in Nelson, one tonight and the other on Saturday.

This evening Moutere/Awatere travel to Riwaka to play the high-flying Kahurangi side, the match kicking off at 7.30pm.

Tomorrow Renwick take on Wanderers at Brightwater with an earlier-than-usual kick off time of 2pm.

The Green Machine are on something of a roll, having won their previous two encounters, and will be keen to return from Brightwater Domain with some points if they are to have any chance of reaching the semifinals.

Central, who have the bye tomorrow along with Waitohi, are the best-placed of the Marlborough sides, currently sitting fourth on the standings. They have away fixtures against Waimea and Waitohi to complete the round robin section of Tasman Trophy play and will likely have to win both to progress to the play-offs.

Tasman Trophy standings: Kahurangi 31 (played 7), Waimea Old Boys 31 (7), Marist 26 (6), Central 20 (7), Stoke 18 (6), Renwick 16 (7), Wanderers 15 (6), Nelson 6 (7), Waitohi 7 (7), Moutere/Awatere 5 (7).
