Two new caps have been included in the Marlborough senior men’s cricket squad to play their final match of the 2020-21 season on Sunday.

Wicketkeeper Tom Leonard and medium pace bowler Joel Pannell will play their first match at this level when Marlborough take on Nelson in the annual Newman Shield Challenge at Saxton Oval.

Both sides are allowed to play 12 players in this fixture. Unavailable for selection were Tarin Mason, Will Smith and Benjamin Ivory-McCullum.

The Marlborough team is:

Chris Bartholomeusz, Tim Petrie, Andrew McCaa, Tom Leonard (WK), Matthew Stretch (captain), Ahkil Pant, Tom Sutherland, Cooper Roberts, Bailey Andrews-Kennedy, Nick Weaver, Sam Boyce, Joel Pannell.

The first Newman Shield match was played in November, Nelson winning in Motueka by 26 runs.

Set a moderate target of 197 to bring the prized trophy back over the Whangamoas, Marlborough were dismissed for 171 in the 40th over.

Batting consistency has been Marlborough’s Achilles Heel in recent times so putting runs on the board will be paramount on Sunday.
