Despite a more promising weather forecast for the Marlborough region on Saturday, some Saturday fixtures have already been cancelled. However, some sport is expected to be contested around the province.

Rugby

At this stage all rugby is on. The Marlborough Sub-union premier competition resumes, with the final round-robin matches before semi-finals being played. With all teams picking up two points from last week’s washed-out round, Central lead the table on 21 points, from Renwick on 14, then Waitohi and Awatere/Moutere on 7. This means Central and Renwick have earned the right to host the semis.

Tomorrow, Renwick play Awatere/Moutere at Renwick while Waitohi take on Central at Endeavour Park, Picton. Both games begin at 3pm.

In the Tasman division two competition, Awatere meet Renwick at Seddon Domain, Central play Moutere at Lansdowne Park while Waitohi tackle Pelorus at Endeavour Park. All games kick-off at 1.15pm.

After having a week off from their demanding Miles Toyota championship schedule, the Marlborough Boys’ High School First XV are back in action tomorrow, taking on the high-flying Timaru Boys’ High School side. The game will be played at Renwick with the college front field out of action. Kick-off is noon.

On Saturday, the Tasman Mako women open their Farah Palmer Cup campaign against North Harbour in Albany, kick-off 12.05pm.

Football

All Marlborough junior, youth and senior football has been cancelled for tomorrow.

On the Marlborough Football Facebook page they stated, “After heavy rainfall over the last week, Marlborough Football and Marlborough District Council park contractors have undertaken ground inspections this morning. The fields are soaked, and even with the next 24 hours of clear weather, the pitches are not in a state to be able to handle multiple games without causing significant damage to the playing surfaces. So all fields are closed on Saturday 24th July.”

However, one local game will go ahead. The Nelson women's division one game between BV Bullets and Nelson Suburbs has been moved to Renwick no 1, kick off 3pm.

Meanwhile, the Rangers AFC v Nelson FC top-of-the-table Nelson men’s division one clash is scheduled for a 3pm kick-off at Guppy Park. With FC sitting just three points behind the table-topping Rangers crew this is a pivotal encounter.

Netball

Premier netball resumes on Tuesday with three exciting matches in prospect.

In the early match, which starts at 6pm, Pelorus take on Harlequins, while Awatere and MGC meet at 7.45pm. The final match, also at 7.45pm, pits the two Tokomaru teams against each other, with no competition points at stake.

Swimming

The South Island short course championships are being staged at Stadium 2000 over the weekend.

Sessions began at 8.30am today and run through until around 7pm Sunday. Eighteen Blenheim Swim Club athletes will be in action across a variety of events.
