Tight tennis tussle goes Rapaura's way

Rapaura Wairau River Noir and Renwick produced the match of the night when the latest round of Wine Brokers NZ premier tennis was held on Wednesday.

The tie ended 3-3 on matches won, with Noir taking the honours courtesy of an 8-7 advantage in sets won.

The singles were shared, Renwick’s Joseph Sandford-Jury beating Hamish McRae 6-3, 3-6, 10-8, Hugh Robinson tying it up with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Owen Dodson, then Ella Sowman notching a big win for Noir, beating Stu Campbell in a thriller, 5-7, 6-4, 11-9. The women’s single was won by Mieko Kimura over Lilly Walkenhorst.

Sandford-Jury and Dodson beat Sowman and McRae in the doubles, 6-3, 6-7, 11-9, then Robinson and Walkenhorst levelled the scores with a straight-sets win over Campbell and Kimura.

The other division one tie saw Marlborough Forrest Wines overcome Rapaura Wairau River Blanc 5-1. Oscar Sandford-Jury started the ball rolling for Marlborough, beating Ant Walkenhorst 6-4, 6-4, while Brook Adams and Stephen Dempster both notches singles and doubles wins. Eveline Apthorp scored Blanc’s sole point.

In division two action, Rapaura Wairau River Rose claimed a 5-1 win over Marlborough Next Gen. Georges Decken, Jimmy Rumble and Hiro Kishida notched up two wins apiece. Dan Clarke scored Next Gen’s only win.

The second division two game saw Marlborough Nga Hau Wha defeat Renwick Jana 6-0, all matches decided in straight sets.
