Marlborough’s rising star of the ring, Rogene Daquioag, has scored another notable victory.

The 15-year-old boxer, out of the Marlborough Boxing Club, took on a tough opponent in Kaikoura on Saturday evening and came away with a win by majority decision.

His rival, from the Woolston Boxing Club in Christchurch, was Tomas Sutherland, two years older, much taller and more experienced. This was Rogene’s 10thfight, his opponent entering the ring for the 26th time.

The boys fought in the 62kg light welterweight division. This is Rogene’s first year as a junior and Tomas’s final year in that division.

Coach Raymond Madsen said the victory puts Rogene in good shape for the South Island Golden Gloves next month and the New Zealand champs in September.

The tournament, hoisted by the Kaikoura Boxing Club, was the first staged in the seaside town for 24 years.
